Madhuri began her career in 1984 with a Rajshree film called Abodh. The film did not do particularly well and it was only four later that she came to be recognised as a force, following the release of Tezaab.The film was success and so was Madhuri. After that came a series of films like Ram Lakhan, Parinda, Tridev, Kishen Kanhaiya, Dil, Saajan, Beta, Khalnayak, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Raja, Dil To Paagal Hai and Devdas, all of which did very well at the box office and established her as a star to reckon with. In between, she also worked with director Prakash Jha and did Mrityudand with him. Her fiery performance in the film was much lauded by critcs. Her list of directors include the bigwigs of the industry like Yash Chopra, Prakash Jha, Subhash Ghai, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sooraj Barjatiya, Inder Kumar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She has worked with all the leading actors of her time as well Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, and Akshay Kumar.

After delivering such hits as Dil, Beta and Raja Madhuri earned the title of ‘female Amitabh Bachchan‘ of Bollywood.

Madhuri ruled the roost at Bollywood through the late Eighties and the Nineties. She was one of those few stars blessed with the lethal combination of being a fine actress, a gorgeous looker and a fantastic dancer. In a suitable tribute to her talent and contribution to Hindi cinema, The Indian Government awarded her the Padma Shri this year.

Though her comeback film, after marriage to a US-based doctor and two kids, proved to be a dud at the box office, Madhuri remained unfazed.

Madhuri forayed into filmdom with Abodh in 1986 and was catapulted to fame with the hit dance number Ek Do Teen in Tezaab (1988).

There was no looking back for Madhuri who went on to give a string of hits like Dayavan and Ram Lakhan. She bagged the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in Dil, in which she starred opposite Aamir Khan. She once again walked away with the coveted award for her role in Beta.

Madhuri’s electrifying dance number Choli ke peechche in Khalnayak proved a huge hit and her fan following simply soared.

She repeated the success story in Bollywood blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Koun! , where she shared screen space with Salman Khan and bagged yet another Filmfare.

Her powerful performance in mega hit Dil To Pagal Hai won her a fourth best actress award.

The dancing diva also charmed renowned Indian painter MF Hussain, who cast her in his film Gaja Gamini.

In 2001, Madhuri was awarded the National Citizens Award, which recognises excellence in various activities affecting national life. The very next year she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s mega-budget Devdas with Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Not only did her acting earn rave reviews, she also bagged a Filmfare Award for best supporting actress.

It was after Devdas that she decided to take a break from Bollywood and devote more time to her family in the US.

“There is no place for politics in the film industry as it only promotes art, nothing else,” Chopra, who was here on a personal visit, told reporters. He said immediately after objections were raised over the use of the word “mochi” (cobbler) in the title track of the film, the producers (Yash Raj Films) ordered deleting of the controversial line from the prints of the movie across the country.

“There was no intention to hurt the sentiments of any caste or community,” he clarified. But he evaded questions on the protests over the song in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. The three states banned screening of the movie, only to lift it later.

Hence it doesn’t come as much surprise to see Amul use an image from the Dhak Dhak girl’s comeback movie in its hoardings all over.

The hoarding which shows cute pictures of characters resembling Madhuri and her co-star Konkona Sen Sharma also has the ‘Utterly Butterly’ Amul girl shown as Madhuri’s daughter.

The trio are gleefully munching on their favorite bread and butter snack while showing you their jalwa.

However, by Friday afternoon, the film was being discussed neither for its direction nor performances but for a sudden controversy that it had stirred. Apparently, the title track of the film had a line which offended certain lower sections of the society.

However, the artist of the above picture has put the whole episode in a unique manner. With the initial verdict out over the weekend, looks like both the upper class as well as the lower class don’t really have any reason to rush to the theatres to catch this Madhuri flick. This surely isn’t any reason to dance. It even leaves you pondering whether the saying “Any publicity is good publicity” always holds true.

According to box-office reports, Madhuri Dixit’s much-awaited comeback vehicle opened to a poor response of 25 to 30 percent across the country and hasn’t set the cash registers ringing yet.

The film registered 50 to 55 percent occupancy in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. With up to 60 percent in Rajasthan and Mumbai it was a little better over the weekend.

In the capital and its suburbs, the occupancy in some popular multiplexes was dismal. JAM had 30 percent, Satyam about 65 percent and M2K Cinemas had less than 40 percent.

The film was banned in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana after Dalit leaders alleged that the title song made derogatory insinuation about the community.

The objectionable portion of the title song was: “Bazar mein machi hai maramar; bole mochi bhi khud ko sunar” (There is so much chaos in the market that even a cobbler is calling himself a jeweller).

Trouble first erupted when Udit Raj, who heads the Indian Justice Party, Friday led a demonstration to a movie hall in New Delhi where the film was being screened.

The ban was revoked after producer Yash Chopra tendered an apology and removed the objectionable line from the title song.

Kunal, who plays the role of a small town goon in the film, said after working with her, he has become even a bigger admirer of the actress.

although review of the films and reaction of the viewers were not bad, but people has started writing about the films that it is a failure.

They are citing the numbers of people in the theaters on Saturday, they are not making note of the fact that since Friday night there was a feel of insecurity in the people. Many people avoid the shows for two reasons, some thinks that it has been banned, second people were afraid of any mis happening or violent agitation by political parties, so they normally avoid the film.

But from Satuday, it gains some ground and slowly film picks its Friday show speed.

In my view, film is really a good comeback for Madhuri, people associated with film script has done a great job.

She ponders for a while. “We’ll see how it goes. Maybe I could again shoot in India during the kids’ vacations. Or then the film could be shot in the US.” Madhuri’s sons Arin and Ryan have seen mom’s films in passing. “And they’ve seen Devdas fully. They found me strange in that film because I was bedecked and bejeweled from head to toe. What I’ve worn in Aaja Nachle is how they see me dressed at home…Hum Aapke Hain Koun was another film that was pretty close to me in dress and thought,” she adds after a moment’s thought.
