At least, Aamir and Hrithik return after a long time
They gave some of the biggest hits of 2006, but have been missing in action throughout 2007. Aamir Khan’s first movie to hit the screens this year “Taare Zameen Par” will come out only in December. And Hrithik Roshan’s much-awaited Jodhaa Akbar is due in January 2008, which means he won’t have a single release this year.
Does such exclusivity make for sound strategy? “Of course it does,” says adman Prahlad Kakar. “Just look at Hrithik in Dhoom 2 . He didn’t sculpt that body overnight. It took hard work and sweat and the results are incredible. Now every time there’s an action film made, Hrithik will be the default benchmark.” Little wonder, then, that the greek god signed a Rs 35 crore movie deal which, insiders say, is currently under review.
Aamir, of course, is one contemporary Indian actor who gets into the skin of every role he does. Case in point: Mangal Pandey , where the actor’s carefully cultivated look drew seetis from the audience and appreciation from the critics. In Taare Zameen Par, he plays the part of a young teacher. And if you go by the promos, Aamir looks the part, down to the last detail.
So what works better? Aamir’s exclusivity or Akshay’s back-to-back strategy? “There is no formula,” says Anupam Kher, founder of Actor Prepares. “Some roles require dedicated attention, others are best portrayed with spontaneity. As long as you deliver the goods, you will be appreciated.”
